What is Shockwave Therapy?
Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT for short) is a non-invasive option for the treatment of various pains and diseases of the musculoskeletal system. ESWT has been used successfully in orthopaedic pain therapy since the beginning of the 1990s. Many years of experience prove that certain pathological changes in tendons, ligaments, capsules, muscles and bones can be specifically eliminated with the help of this healing method. Frequently treated conditions include frozen shoulder, tennis elbow and heel pain (plantar fasciitis). The shock waves used are short sound pulses that can penetrate water and soft tissue. The shock waves are generated outside the body (»extracorporeally«) in the handpiece of the device and transmitted into the patient's body by means of ultrasound gel, where they have a targeted effect on the painful areas. ESWT is performed by qualified therapists. For patients, it is largely free of risks and side effects. The treatment takes place on an outpatient basis and can therefore be easily integrated into everyday life – immediately afterwards, patients can continue with their normal daily routine.
What are shock waves?
Shock waves are high-energy, audible sound waves. They are characterised by a rapid increase in pressure and a short pulse length. They occur in our everyday lives, for example, when aircraft break the sound barrier. Shock waves have been used in medicine since 1980. Originally, the then-new procedure was introduced to remove kidney and gall stones without surgery – which was successful and revolutionised the treatment of these complaints. The second area of application was the treatment of poorly healing bone fractures, so-called pseudarthroses. Due to these successes, more and more research was done on the effect of shock waves on the human body. Subsequently, it was quickly discovered that the procedure is also suitable for the treatment of numerous painful diseases of the musculoskeletal system. Since the beginning of the 1990s, this area of application has become increasingly important and has since proven its worth, including in top international sport. Today, doctors use shock wave therapy to treat common orthopaedic medical conditions such as frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, achillodynia, patellar tip syndrome and heel pain in plantar fasciitis. Depending on the indication, focused or radial shock waves (or both) are used.
How successful is the treatment?
The effect of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) on the human body has been intensively researched for more than three decades. For individual medical conditions such as heel pain (plantar fasciitis), studies have now clearly proven its effectiveness. Many patients report being pain-free or experiencing significantly reduced pain after just one or two sessions. Regained freedom from pain or freedom of movement restores some their quality of life.

How long are sessions and how many are needed?
While ESWT is highly effective at healing damaged tissue and reducing pain, it is only one component of our rehabilitative process; as it is combined with Fascia massage, Chiropractic adjustments, and Neuromuscular Electric Stimulation to balance and strengthen not just the problem area, but the body as a whole. Therefore, the duration and number of sessions required will vary depending on the number and severity of your issues. In the initial consultation and assessment, we will determine a working plan of attack that we feel will deliver the best results for you. That plan is, however, subject to change depending on how your body responds (sometimes more is needed, sometimes less).
